About OT

What is occupational therapy

Our passion is making you the best version of yourself, reaching functional capacities so you can live a long and loving life. To do this we break down all the skill into 6 categories:

  1. Sensory Processing

  2. Social and Emotional Skills

  3. Gross Motor

  4. Fine motor (refined motor of the eyes, mouth and hands)

  5. Cognition

  6. Activities of Daily Living

From here we break each category down further into the smallest skill so we can determine where the breakdown in skill is coming from and then build from there.

Not all OTs do it this way. Some go in reverse to us. We don’t agree with top down models because it goes against all research on how the brain learns. Plus it doesn’t feel very nice to have someone else determine our values or purpose.

After figuring out where the breakdown is, we work with our clients in a fun and engaging way to build skills without feeling like it’s hard work. This can be hard for our parents to understand so we provide vital information as we take this journey both in session, in caregiver review sessions and though our online training portal.

About Behaviour Support

What is behaviour support

When we have limitations in skills or dysfunctions in our sensory processing, sometimes we develop some interesting behaviours. Sometimes these behaviours get called ‘behaviours of concern’. Instead of trying to control these behaviours, we assess them and determine where they are coming from. Some behaviours have root cause in:

  1. Social development

  2. Emotional development

  3. Sensory processing

  4. Cognition

  5. Communication

Instead of adding in controlling and cognitive approaches we find out why the behaviour is occurring and implement supports and strategies to develop the skill needed to remove or stop the behaviour.

This can be formalised in a behaviour support plan or can be included as part of your services within occupational therapy.

About Feeding Therapy

WHAT IS FEEDING THERAPY

When we have dysfunctions in our sensory systems we generally develop feeding dysfunctions. These can be present due to limitations in:

  1. Our enteric nervous system (the gut)

  2. Sensory processing which reduces our diet

  3. social and emotion skills which limits our regulation and engagement with food.

  4. Oral motor skills

At Transforming Kids we engage in feeding therapy by looking at all areas and engaging in either informal feeding services or formal feeding services.

If you are interested in feeding services, you can contact us for a feeding questionnaire and we can point you in the right direction for receiving feeding therapy.
